The “Flat rate” Computer Myth

Have you ever heard an ad over the radio or tv that there’s this awesome computer repair shop not far away that charges flat fees?

You probably thought this business is seriously competitive and innovative for them to charge a flat rate no matter what issues need to be fixed on your computer.

Well, no. Think again. The flat fees mean flat labor fees. Parts, software, and other add-ons to the bill are certainly not included.

The Pricey It Gets, Better The Quality 

Another bubble to burst.

Pricey does not mean Better. In the tech world, quality comes at various prices. So shop around and find the best deals. You may find a very good quality device for half as much as a brand new Mac or IOS.

 Mac Computers Do Not Get Viruses

“Once you go, Mac, you won’t go back” is a popular phrase among most computer users.

The invincible, super mac was really once thought to not ever be susceptible to viruses. Most viruses once were targeted at PCs built by Windows. However, hackers and perpetrators have recently begun to craft attacks designed for the MacBook and IOS. In 2016, Apple announced a compromise on its devices. So Mac lovers, this was your warning.

 If you work on getting your computer faster, your internet will be faster as well

This makes logical sense, doesn’t it? It should. But what about those working with dial-up still? Would this still be applicable?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Defragging, increasing memory and getting rid of viruses and malware may speed up your computer, but your internet speed is heavily dependent on your internet supplier, the internet connection method as well as connectivity variables.

Anti-virus software and firewalls are full-proof

This would catch many off guards. The rumor has it firewalls and anti-virus software guarantees that your device would be immune to all malware and other threats.

However, many viruses trick you into believing you have a virus and in the guise of clearing it, your computer is led away like a lamb to the slaughterhouse, to become infected.

Removing unwanted files will improve performance

This is not just a hack used for computers/laptops, but also phones. However is there any truth to it?

Turns out, there is not much. Clearing files only helps if your storage capacity is almost full. To really improve performance, run an antivirus scan, reboot your computer and ensure all updates are completed.

Viruses can potentially damage Hardware

A long-time assumption in the tech world says viruses can cause serious and great harm to the hardware or physical parts of your computer.

This is indeed, just a myth. The most that need to be done to hardware to rescue it from a virus, is to wipe off the correlating software written on it. Then just like anything else, it’s brand new once more. All other “facts” are mere fiction.

Firefox is more immune to viruses than Explorer is

Have you developed a preference for Mozilla Firefox over Explorer due to “safety” from viruses and other malware? We’re sorry to break it to you, but, this is yet again just another myth of computer repair. Mozilla or Explorer, Chrome, or Opera, a virus is a virus and all web explorers are susceptible.

Switching your computer totally off will harm your computer

Have you heard of this little saying going around? And you believed it all this long!

Well, it’s just another myth. The truth is switching your computer off immediately will not harm it. The very most it could do is hinder updates and upgrades which will always start over again and complete their processes as long as you give them the time.

Do you have a favorite computer technician? Chances are if you do, then you have full faith in that person.

However, he must not be a superman! Therefore if your repair guy does any wrong, there are many others out there who still might be able to fix it.
